It was a unique mobile, that none of us had seen till only a few times, a pink Motorola V3…

Installing Wordpress on your PC

About Me, Articles, Blogging, Fun, General, Leisure, Programming, Web July 9th, 2008

Well, my first tutorial for wordpress :

How to install wordpress on your computer, for Dummies

First of all, lets talk a bit about wordpress

WordPress is a blog publishing system written in PHP. All data is stored in a MySQL database.

Having your blog on the web is a bit more simpler, for example you can

  • Create an account on wordpress.com and have your blog accessible at http://yourblogname.wordpress.com

Registering your new blog is so simple!

  • Create an account on blogspot.com and have your blog as http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/

However, in this tutorial, i will explain how to create a blog on your own desktop computer/laptop, for any reason you have, perhaps to test how to use it, get used to it, whatever!

Step.01

Download Wordpress installation

Head towards www.wordpress.org to download the latest version available

Step.02

Download a web server, here, EasyPHP available at http://www.easyphp.org/

This web server is one among the loads available on the net, and by installing any of these web servers on your personal computer, you will be able to simulate a server and have php applications run!

Once downloaded, run the installation.

Step.03

Now that you have your wordpress installation and easyphp installation done, extract the contents of the wordpress installation in the following directory : C:\Program Files\EasyPHP 2.0b1\www
[depending on your installation]

Step.04

Ensure than your web server is running by accessing it from your start menu

Step.05

Now, we are going to access your wordpress folder through your browser at the address : http://localhost/

You will get something like that in your browser:

Click on the [wordpress] folder to start the installation.
(Depending of course, if you have renamed the folder earlier)

Step.06

Now, follow the instructions on the screen…

Step.07

You will be asked for database setting, refer to the screenshot below…

You have to create a new database so that your wordpress blog can store the necessary info to run…

To create a new database, open your browser and hit the address : http://localhost/home/mysql/ or http://localhost/home/mysql/

Enter the name of your database (ensure that you enter the same name as in the installation page)

Note that your database username may be root and password left as blank….
This depends on your settings of course…

Step.08

Next, enter the details about your blog;

Step.09

Note down the username and password automatically generated for you and use the same to login the Admininstration Control Panel, as shown below…

Thats it!

Your blog is Ready!!!

Step.10

Now, lets access your blog!!!

You can view your blog by typing the address : http://localhost/wordpress/

and your the admin panel, its http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/

You can now start blogging!!!

Some (illegal?) practices of filling stations

Articles, Blogging, General, News July 7th, 2008

Hi everyone…

Since some days, i wanted to blog on this particular topic, especially with the rise of petrol/diesel/gas

Perhaps some of you may have noticed this practice in some of the filling stations in our island, i did at several times, especially when the State Trading Corporation (STC) is on the point of reviewing the price of the petroleum products each 3months.

In Mauritius, the State Trading Corporation is responsible for reviewing the prices of different products to reflect the world price.

Some of these filling stations stop their daily activities much earlier than usual, thus, keeping their stock of petroleum for the next day, where they will gain much more profit with their old stock (bought at cheaper price).

Lets say that the station X has filled all the tanks (1000L) at Rs41.00/Litre.

Imagine that at 6pm, there is 500Litres left and the STC has announced an increase in the price of petrol which will be effective at 0000hrs the same day.
This same station X shuts down immediately, saying that it is out of stock!

Who gonna know if its the truth??

The next day, the Station sells the old stock at rs49/Litre, thus making a profit of rs8, in addition to its normal profit.

Thats makes about euh, pas koner kombien profit en plis, mais c ene gros profit, illegallement!!!

Ya, this is the reality, in our paradise island….

Normally, there are laws that exist to prevent such practices, but do all the filling stations abide to those laws?

Suprisingly, this happens only on the day where the prices are gonna increase most probably, once every 3months!

My new desktop pc

About Me, Blogging, How to?, News, Technology July 5th, 2008

It was nearly a nightmare for me to take a final decision :

A desktop computer or a laptop???

I took nearly 2 weeks, and finally i went for a desktop computer, which i bought today.

Here are the specs;

  • Core 2 Duo 2.4 with 2Mb Cache

  • 19inch LCD Screen  (its enormous!)

  • 2Mb GB Ram Memory
  • 160Gb Hard Disk Sata
  • 256MB Asus EN7200GS, but am not a gamer, not even solitaire!

  • DVD Writer Asus
  • Asus Casing
  • USB Mouse/Keyboard lol
  • A floppy drive and a modem (lol, despite Vicky’s protestation)

I met Vicky at Plouis, 1 hr late :P

We took (lol, purchased) the different parts and headed to Azagen’s house so that he could build the system.

Why We chose him?
He had much more practice than us, since he has an IT sales company (Yeah, u can visit his site!)

lol! It was quite fun setting up the system… without forgetting to take some pics of course!

Once at home, i install everything, and got some trouble connecting to the internet using MyT’s Wifi…
But it went ok then :D

Oh yeah, i forgot to mention, Two of my drivers installation cds were left at Azagen’s place and i had to download them from the net!

Some mins after, i managed to crash THE Operating System (Win XP) and i had to restart from scratch (Format, install windows, office, blabla blabla…)
Linux? perhaps afterwards….

Now everthing is installed and stable, i am enjoying the new setup, especially remote connection and network at home, enabling me to move things from my old laptop to my new desktop pc without any problems!

Thanks again to Vicky and Azagen :D

Without you, euh, mo ti pu aster ene laptop trankil :P haha:!:
