About Me, Blogging, General, Leisure, Technology October 7th, 2007

Who doesnt use mobile phones nowadays?

mob-both-hand.jpg

Just imagine your day without your mobile, the loneliness of your pocket and the emptiness of your hand, lol.

Well, in my short lifetime, i used (in order)

  1. “Dancall” : solid, heavy duty and can be used as a matraque to stop trouble makers!
  2. Ericsson A2628, euh, considerably big - lost :(
  3. Ericsson T10 :), so trendy at that time (sold)
  4. Motorola Talkabout (i dont remember the name, lying in my drawer)
  5. Nokia 3330, white one, the next most common mob (euh, sold)
  6. Nokia 1100 (just gave to dad, as secondary mob)
  7. Nokia 6600 (given to my sis)
  8. Nokia N73 ( FOR SALE AT RS10,000)
  9. Nokia N80i,the latest in my collections

mob-both.jpg

Yesterday i acquired the N80 Internet Edition, for the only reason, i needed a wifi mobile at home to use with the livebox. With the help of Splash (thnks!), i configured the connection and am still using it, while am not sitting at my laptop.

n80.jpg

n73.jpg

However, the N73 is much more nicer than the N80 for different reasons;

  • Carl Zeiss Optics, 3.15 MP
  • Stereo Speakers (available only in N73 and N95)
  • Larger screen than N80
  • Brighter Screen than N80
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • 2 days battery life even for heavy usage

As i mentioned earlier, the

N73

FOR SALE at

Only Rs10,000

  • Made In Finland
  • 3.15 MP Camera wiz Carl Zeiss Optics
  • Stereo Speakers
  • All Original Accessories + Charger
  • Box
  • Used since April 2007
  • Manufacture Date : Nov 2006

I am not really keen to sell it, when comparing both mobiles, but since i have now permanently moved to emtel (Damn Network!), i wont need 2 different mobs.
For 2 months, i used my Nokia 1100 and N73 at the same time.

Btw, i already have some potential customers, so hurry up…

My next target is the superb, extraordinary N95!!!

The Mobile of your dreams, nothing compared to that iPhone!

hmm, target set to 1 month or max 2 months :)

Well, now, wat mobs have u been using since ur first one?

So, now that my Nomad Contract is over, i will try my luck wiz myT.
No Comments from the 2 installation guys from MT, they were cool, and everything is working properly, except that i am receiving only 4 channels on the TNT, got to check my antenna tomorrow.

Well, thats all for this post….

I have finally moved to myT,

According to you, Good or Bad thing? Compared to Nomad?

to my dear laptop…

About Me, Blogging, Fun, General, Technology September 28th, 2007

to my dear laptop,

please do not hibernate now, i have to tell you something that may be hard for you to store onto ur drive.

Its already been more than 3 years now that u have been wiz me, sharing my good and bad times through my virtual life, more specially, u know what and also all those assignments n projects that we have done together…

U have been of a huge help to me, but now, i think that its becoming a bit difficult for us to communicate properly.

Some 2 years ago, i had sent you for repairs to Singapore since u were still under warranty. i hope u still remember those 10 lines that appeared on ur 15″ LCD screen. I have been separated from u for 2 whole months and now, 3 years after, the 10 lines are nothing to the 60 lines (and still counting) that have enhanced ur screen, making my life quite a hell for watching films or using the net…

screen.jpg

I know u r not at fault, but i will be here wiz you even in ur bad times.
I will also provide u the moral support to make u forget those “signes de beautés”.

Today i have the immense pleasure to announce to you that i will very soon buy another monitor to connect to ur VGA port and that would be of immense benefit to you.

I sincerely hope that u will try ur best to stay by my side for some time more, sharing some more time together…

Your faithful user,

e-commerce within mauritius?

Academics, Articles, Blogging, General, News, Technology, Web July 16th, 2007

The largest shopping mall in the world is operating all round the clock, millions of potential customers constantly on the move comparing prices here and there and placing their orders, which can take a few hrs to a few days before their delivery to the other end of the world.

Recently, someone told me that it took only 1 week for his newly acquired a laptop battery bought from ebay, to be delivered here in mauritius.
The Concept of the world as a small global village (or la ville, attention ena dimounes frustrer) is here, except in Mauritius.

The addition of Mauritius in the list of Paypal (posted by Josh) will surely boost e-shopping among our Mauritian fellows but not necessary within mauritius, at least, not for now.

e-banking has been introduced since long by SBM or MCB.
I tried SBM Online (guessed they stole the word online from уαѕнαkuη Oηliηe, hihi ), it works great but their security logging system sucks.
While playing with the system, my browser crashed and when u try to re-login into the system, u cant, koz, u had not properly logged off.
As a consequence, u have to wait for the system to kick you out, after some time, perhaps after 15-30 mins to be able to sign in again!

As reported in Express today, we are not ready to include e-shopping in our culture, but i think that it is not only our fault.

Mauritius, being a small island, surrounded by …[blabla], i find it rather difficult to introduce e-commerce, at least not immediately.

Why?

  • I dont think we have the appropriate laws and judicial structure to cater for cyber crime or ecommerce yet.Iust to quote, the mauritian hacker of the Government Portal was freed of all charges since his case was hanging in court for more than 2 years!
    More on Express
  • Also, i dont think that our ISPs or even authorities to have the required expertise to track down users yet.

    Some simple examples:
    - Nomad itself has some modems wandering around in mauritius, being used freely since months, without anyone knowing it lol
    - Frequent billing problems in telephone bills for adsl or myT users may also prove the lack of organisation at some part in the structure.

So, i doubt that they are ready to take such a challenge yet.

  • Most important issue, which will be most difficult to overcome is our daily culture and ways of getting things done.
You may be one of the highest modern/hi-tech person in mauritius, but i think you would prefer to spend some time looking for your items in a hypermarket than buying it online, just for the pleasure of spending some time with your family or without the work stress.

For many of us, doing our first e-shopping would be simply fun, but i dont think that we would do it for long, specially if it concerns something that can be easily bought from our hypermarkets or retailers.

On the other hand, e-buying a domain or hosting online or even books (mo pas lire), will be something nice in which i would be very much interested and encourage others to do.

Take your credit cards out,

2day, we gonna shop online!

So,

would u do it?

Bilan of Internet Service Providers in Mauritius

Articles, General, News, Technology, Web July 5th, 2007

I thought i was, as usual, the only one unsatisfied about the internet connection i have however the whole majority of surfers seems to be complaining about their internet connection in Mauritius, be it, Nomad, ADSL, MyT or now even MTML.

A lot about my experience about the “high speed wireless reliable internet access” (Nomad) has been read here in this blog.

Its sure that people are fed with nomad as users and also, as visitors in this blog, thanks for ur patience.
[ You can read the whole range about nomad here ]

Mauritius Telecom and Telecom Plus offer the following;

  • Wanadoo ADSL
  • MyT

Mr Avinash Meetoo has been conducting a survey on the bandwidth available with the help of other persons.
According to his first results,

Simply said, we are getting much less than what we are paying for.

and finally, the latest on the market, MTML

as our new blogger friend, Azagen, says here in his first post

My complaints to MTML Services.
I’ve been using the services of these guy’s there since January. Since then, these people there have been messing and constantly fooling me. I’ve got so many problems with them that i had to go to ACIM to lodge a complaint about them. I have already sent a letter of six full pages to the ICTA to complain about the lack of responsibility and profesionalism of the people working there.

Till now, he is the only one known to have mtml in our class, and at the start, he was very proud of his 244 kbps connection :P
Seems now that his internet experience is no more the same.

However, i do know another friend, but till now, he hasnt been complaining about his connection

The views and experience of the different ISPs seems to differ depending on different factors;

  • Location ( myT and Nomad)Different people say different things about their connection, and it seems that different regions do not always give the same speed since the internet speed depends on the distance from the Relay(myT) or the BTS antenna (Nomad) and also, the degree of saturation.
  • Internet UsageThose using myT for mass downloading often complain about low speed, because they exceeded the garantie d’usage.

As for Nomad, many of the users do not even know how to use internet properly because of the huge nomad campaign to attract customers.

Sorry for the word, but huge majority of nomad users
    are simply “COUYON”

They either do not care about their connection, or are not aware that the problems they get are due to their ‘reliable’ connection.
Also, may of them, are ’shy’ to call the customer care…
Believe me, i know personally a lot of them.

  • Customer Care Experience

    A quote from many myT users;

    Customer care mari bon

So, it seems that they are highly help-full and reliable

    Unlike Nomad, where
    - You may be put on hold for even more than 10 mins
    - You may have to wait for their technicians or Customer Care agents to call you back for days!
    - The problems get solved by themselves, no explanation about the source of problem or even the solution applied

  • Tracking of resourcesThis applied to nomad, from personal experience and feedback.
Did you know that there are some users of nomad, who havent paid their monthly fees for month???

Also, i heard of someone who migrated to America, and who simply had “bouille so modem wiz lapaille dither” before going :P

Till now, Nomad, has not reported any of these cases and also, very often, they have huge billing errors in their monthly settlements!

  • Home InterventionI once got the feedback that myT technicians are very very quick to attend outdoors, sometimes coming home even without notice, lol.

    However, some friends got the following problem;
Telecom Plus automatically switched their ADSL connection to myT without notice for testing and consequently, they dont have any internet access.
This happenned in 2 known case
    - When technicians are supposed to come to upgrade ur connection
    - or when they test your lines to see for myT support.

As for Nomad, u have to wait for the day where technicians are deployed on the part of the island where u live. Just to add, Outdoor technicians at nomad are very limited (for the north, i know only 2)

Security @ Ebene Cybercity, Tower 1

About Me, General, News, Technology July 4th, 2007

Ebene Cybercity, Tower 1…
the most intelligent building in Mauritius at least (thats what is being told)

well, many of u have sure been there and may have seen the security deployed there,at entry, or before entering the lifts…

The Control Room, has always amazed me…
I would be grateful to that person who could make me enter there and allow me to see if the screens are not just screensavers :P

however, i managed to see a security guard there, glaring at a screen, divided into more than 10 portions, displaying camera outputs.

kouma dire “24hr chrono” manke zis jack Bauer :P

well, i nearly forgot that, i took the pic of a Visitor Card, during my last visit, yesterday. Supposingly, i think, i dont have the right to take that pic, but it wasnt written anywhere :P

lol, its not so well protected after all.

anyway, thats only a visitor’s card and each person working at the cyber tower has a permanent access card, which i dont have yet :P

wish it is for soon :)

n thats only tower 1, there are 3 more towers… :P

infotech 2007, ur expectations?

Articles, Blogging, Fun, General, News, Technology, Web June 30th, 2007

Since some years, Infotech Exhibitions has become part of our ‘culture’, if we can say it as such.

Every year, thousand of mauritians make a must to visit THE infotech, which is supposed to be a window over our future cyber world, where we are already lagging behind by one or two decades.

It is now purely commercial rather than supposingly, making mauritians discover the ‘latest’ technologies.

Some time back, it was announced(more can be read here);

INFOTECH 2007 will be held from Wednesday 8 to Sunday 12 August 2007 at the Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre (SVICC) in Pailles

The Opening Ceremony will take place on 8 August 2007 and the exhibition will be open to the public over four days from Thursday 9 to Sunday 12 August 2007.

However, as the exhibitions succeed one after the other, most of us have been realizing that there is no real innovation or revolutionary products which we would be expecting to see, displayed on the shelfs.

Still, we do have some exhibitors which attracted much visitors last year, for instance

  • The apples that stood there, large screens, fascinating most of us.
  • Emtel stand with their cow-girls
  • Nomad, with the hundreds of agents, spamming the expo
  • That famous BMW which can be seen in so many hi5 profiles, lol

without forgetting the usual ones like

  • MBC and the private radios Studio
  • Rajiv Gandhi Science Center with their Virtual Simulator
  • tens of Computer Shops exposing their products

The prices of the stands range from rs45,000 up to rs190,000…

For this year’s edition, most of us would like to see new things come up, in addition to the “copy paste” that has been done since all these years.

Personally, i would like to see something that would bring a change in our local websphere, that would be a great innovation for a cyber island.

  • why is it that, we, mauritians, are still lagging behind when it comes to participating in online forums/blogs?

  • how many of us do possess a web site, when most of us(YOU) do have a 50Mb free personal web server space offered by Telecom Plus if you have ADSL or MyT?Let aside the normal Internet Users…
Lets consider how many Computer Science Students or even IT-related job holders do have a simple web site or even their space on the web? without taking hi5 or facebook into consideration… its sometimes a shame for us with thousand of them leaving College and hundreds of them graduating, yearly…

Do show that u are in the IT Field by at least proving that you do know how to make a simple blog or web site.

Perhaps, it would be interesting to have an exhibitor or organisation, promoting this culture, but i doubt there will be, seeing the cost of the stands.

So, my question is

What do you expect for

         Infotech 2007?

OneClick Install, Wordpress Plugin

Blogging, General, Technology, Web June 28th, 2007

I came across this interesting plugin and immediately installed it on my server koz i know it will be of great use to me.

With OneClick Install, no need for ftp to upload your themes or install your plugins.

Just install this plugin and use its interface to upload themes or plugins into ur host server directly, just like an attachment.

and one very interesting feature is that the plugin allows u to upload ZIP files and it will unzip it once its uploaded.

Benefits?

  • No Need for FTP Clients on each computer u use
  • Upload the Zip Files directly

Download it from here

Nomad : Chassez le naturel, il revient o gallop

About Me, Articles, Blogging, General, Nomad, Technology, Web June 22nd, 2007

hello to all….

i should first of all be grateful that nomad is working and allowing me to post this in my blog…thnks :D

so, “mo commence plaigne imper”

this started 2 days back, with a very low speed since early the morning.
i called them to complain as usual and during the “troubleshooting”, at one time, when the modem was reset from there, it became “capoute”/Out of order…
some technical problem, no display on screen and no connection

please note that as usual, at that time, the BTS antenna was again out of order and the persons concerned are always there as usual to put it to work again.

I had to go to a nomad stand to get it exchanged and supposingly enjoy a good connection, as says the moto;

“High Speed Reliable Internet Access”

no no no…
since then, my connection seems ko.
am getting surf speeds of about 50-70kbps for a 128 kbps modem.

Screenshot taken before writing this

today, since the morning, have been calling them several times and no one is able to give me a reason why i am getting this speed.
i called them at 1730 and “customer care agent la ine passe ene movais 10mins”

ah, seems that nomad is kouma dire “la boutik sinois”…

there is no one in charge there at times, just like today, when i asked to talk to one of the supervisors or even a technician.

after, some “maltraiter and kozer kouyon”, a supervisor was “finally available” and according to her,

bane fluctuations lo rezo dan le nord p cause sa problem la.

i agree 4 fluctuation, but not at the rate of 50%, sometimes giving 50kbps!

It seems that as usual and always, technicians are working on it right now and everything will be ok at 19hrs. i promised to her to call her back at 19hrs….LOL….

so, thats about the everyday life of nomad users….

hmm, Nomad Newsletter is back, 5th edition….
just one screenshot is enough:

i would like to know to which extent is this true….

ah, also, i forgot to mention that according to nomad,

Customers do not have the right to use a software called
“Navini Diagnostic” which is freely available from Navini’s Site.

Instead, I encourage, every nomad user to download it(if ur nomad works) and use it koz

  • It allows u to know from which antenna u r receiving connection
  • Distance from that antenna
  • Reset your modem from your computer itself
  • Get technical details about your modem
  • Get Graphs of Speed and Quality

Get it Now and tell Customer Care that it is available and you are using it.

U can also meet the nomad staff here:

finally, do not forget but

Infotech will be coming soon, hehehehehe

Connection is now 65kbps, just checked!
